ABSTRACT: Two variants of Penicillium citrinum Thom were isolated from nature. One was white (complete lack of conidial colour) and the other nutritionally deficient (unable to utillze nitrate nitrogen). Physiological and biochemical characters and electrophoresis of protein patterns and zymograms were used as an aid to the determination of the taxonomic status of these two varuabts, The results show that both the two variants are extremely similar to the normal strain, and so should not be treated as separate taxa. It is appropriate to consider them as natural variants with no special taxonomic status.
