ABSTRACT: Selected recent developments in techniques and approaches to the systematics of fungi are reviewed, including: electron microscopy; staining techniques; secondary metabolites; enzymes; serology; wall carbohydrates, fatty acids and quinones; chromosomes and nucleic acids; and numerical techniques. The current and future implications of these developments are discussed, and the formulation of multidisciplinary and multinational approaches are considered to have particular promise for the future.
