HISTORY: The Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) was founded on December 3, 1958. Its predecessors were the Institute of Applied Mycology (led by the late phytopathologist and mycologist Fanglan Tai) and the Beijing Laboratory of Microbiology (led by the late industrial microbiologist Xinfang Fang), both of the CAS.
RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS: For the past 40 years since its establishment, the IMCAS has had over 300 major achievements in scientific research, winning 25 national awards in science and technology, 79 awards in science and technology in the CAS and in provinces and ministries. These achievements have significantly contributed to the development of relative fields of research, advancement of science and technology and growth of national economy in China.
STAFF: There are currently 462 staff members in the IMCAS, the 384 of them are scientific and technical personnel including 139 senior scientists or technologists, 2 CAS academicians and 18 supervisors of Ph.D. students. The IMCAS offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology, virology, biochemistry and microbial genetics. At present, 46 M.Sc. and 36 Ph.D. students, and 2 postdoctoral fellows are being trained in the IMCAS.
STRUCTURE: The IMCAS consists of five research departments, a state key laboratory, two CAS open laboratories and an IMCAS open laboratory. Also affiliated with the IMCAS are a fungal herbarium with a collection of 400,000 specimen (the largest of its kind in Asia), a culture collection of 10,000 isolates of microorganisms, a Fermentation Pilot Plant well equipped for fermentation and post-fermentation processing, a New Bio-technique Center equipped with modern biological instruments and a specialized library with collections of 60,000 volumes.
